Custom global filtering for widgets and dashboards

There should be a feature that allows the custom filtering of widgets and dashboards based on a user's setting within the dashboard.

i.e. If my Log Profile is collecting NGINX logs from /var/log/nginx/*.access.log then I should be able to filter my dashboard and widgets to only show logs from one (or multiple) of those files caught in the wildcard path (for example /var/log/nginx/www.site1.com.access.log)

This could be achieved by:

  • allowing the user to filter an entire dashboard or widget based on a log value in their custom log format
  • allowing the user to select which file data is being shown for when logs are ingested from multiple paths

Ultimately, the data visualisation features in dashboards and widgets do not allow for any real-time filtering. Meaning if the user wanted to monitor multiple different log files from the same server they would need to create a different Saved Search and a different dashboard for every single app/site/log.

We understand the need for more granular, real-time filtering within dashboards and widget, especially when working with multiple log files collected under wildcard paths. The ability to filter dashboards or widgets based on specific log values or to choose which file’s data is displayed would definitely improve flexibility and reduce the need to create multiple saved searches or dashboards.
 
However, we are yet to have this feature, rest assured, we will try to include this feature in our upcoming updates.
