Enhanced permissions for Operator role for specific monitor group

I need to give one or two of my operators the right to creation/modification/delete monitors in a specific monitor group, unfortunately this is currently not possible. Currently the only possibility is to make them admin. If doing I'm exposing them to all monitor groups and the full Site24x7 configurations...

Could you create a "Super Operator" role or enhance the operator role with the possibility to grant creation/modification/deletion rights of monitors within a selected monitor group?

Thank you in advance for a quick resolution.

Fully agree with this Mario.
Quit often there are some alerts that needs swift response but the admin is not available.
In our environment, for example, password , certification expired or block. IP adress had been changed..

These alerts could be easily been stopped by a small modification without setting the alert in maintenance mode to suppress.

Having a "Super Operator" in a shift could be very handy to do the modification without putting the monitoring in jeopardy.

Dear Mario,

Thanks for bringing this up here. We will brainstorm this with our team and get back on the feasibility.

Can you please answer the following question

At what point in time did you realize you wanted this feature ? Is it a similar one as Dine has illustrated? For shifts? Or other scenarios like you are away but want to maintain resources in the group?

Hi Jasper,

First of all thanks for your prompt response.

Our organization consist out multiple Business Units. Operators of one BU should not be able to see/modify the monitors of another BU. I realized this 3 days ago while setting up an user account for another BU.

Additionally while reading the comment of Dine & Paul I realized that we had recent failed tests during the weekend due expiration of logon credentials. This could not be fixed by the NOC or Dev/Ops team because they have the Operator role. Due this the external functional monitor was not reliable for a specific application.

When having this feature I can enable the senior staff of my NOC team to adapt/configure monitors under their responsibility during their 24x7 shift.

Best regards,

Mario

Thanks for the elaborate response Mario. This gives us great insight as to what you want to do.

You say that you wanted to setup monitors for different BU. If I may ask, what do you define as a Business Unit here? Staff members working in different shifts / regions/ time zones? Or is it an entity where you don’t mind data being isolated ?

Let me state the difference between a monitor group and a Business Unit according to us.

A monitor group is logical grouping of monitors under the same data space. I.e Though you group the monitors, the monitors are still accessible as reports and in dashboards. It also gives one status and availability for that group. While a BU is a separation of entities in different data spaces. I.e. Data is isolation between BUs. Reports, noc view, alerts, dashboards all isolated between BUs unlike monitor groups.

Want to understand the grouping you have in mind based on which we can suggest a solution or create a solution.

Bulls-eye!

In our case the BU's are different company entities with their own platform specific monitors, alerts and dashboards.

Hi Mario,

We have the concept called Business Units with us. It is not available in client for users to enable, rather you will have to request our support team (support@site24x7.com with [Business Unit from Community] in the subjectline) who then will enable it for your account.

Please be aware that once Business Unit is enabled for your account you cannot migrate back.

Hi Jasper,

Do you have some more information regarding Business Units on the Site24x7 site (like user guide)?

If so could you provide us the link? Thanks

Please be aware that once Business Unit is enabled for your account you cannot migrate back.

What could be the disadvantages of this?

Dear Robert,

Apologies for not replying any sooner. If you indeed opt for Business Unit model and create multiple units. Each unit is treated as a separate entity with its own user space.

Since each unit is isolated, we won't be able to merge these entities into one again (there are restriction in merging data into one) just in case you change your mind.

However, If you have only 1 Business Unit its the same as using a normal account.

I had to give the warning in my previous comment just make sure that users are aware before taking the decision to switch.

Hope this clarifies.

Good Request Mario

Indeed this would be an option with value.

Especially in an 24x7 environment where an admin is not always available.

It would support quick response and prevents a support call out (if one is available)

That would be a nice to have feature! Specially when dealing with shift rotation and working on a 24x7 schedule.

Hello,

We're happy to inform you that we've now introduced monitor-group-level permissions for admin users.

With permissions at the monitor group level, you can provide admins with full permissions for a particular group of monitors. This allows the super admin to restrict access to resources created by others. This also helps in streamlining and controlling the monitor groups that each admin can access.

An admin with monitor-group-level permissions can edit/modify/delete the details related to profiles created by them, but will not have any permission to modify the profiles created by other admins. For instance, a user with admin user privileges and monitor group permissions can view and apply all profiles in Site24x7, such as the location, configuration, notification, email templates, and more, to monitors. However, they cannot edit or delete a profile created by other users. In a nutshell, group admins will have full permission only to the resources created by them.

Thereby instead of a single member handling all responsibilities, each team member can take up the responsibility. Assigning an admin role with monitor-group-level access can help in ensuring:

  • Efficient team level management

  • Confidentiality and security

  • More control over resources

Read our community post to know more about Admin with monitor-group-level access.
