AWS Instance Type Recommendations

Instance type recommendations 

Instance Type recommendations help you identify a better instance category based on your instance usage. These recommendations work on top of the Guidance Report and recommend which Instance Type will be a better fit by assessing the metrics and configuration details.

Where can these recommendations help?

1. Scenario: You are using a high-level instance but utilizing it minimally.

  • Amazon EC2
    An Amazon EC2 instance is deemed to be underutilized if the CPU usage is less than 2% for the past 48 hours.
  • Amazon RDS
    An Amazon RDS DB instance is deemed to be underutilized if the average daily CPU usage is less than 20% for at least four out of the last seven days and the average number of daily database connections is less than 100 for at least four out of the last seven days.
  • Amazon MQ
    An Amazon MQ instance is deemed to be underutilized if the CPU usage is less than 2% for the past 48 hours.
  • Amazon DocumentDB
    An Amazon DocumentDB instance is deemed to be underutilized if the CPU usage is less than 2% for the past 48 hours.
  • Amazon Neptune
    An Amazon Neptune instance is deemed to be underutilized if if the CPU usage is less than 2% for the past 48 hours.
  • Amazon ElastiCache
    An Amazon ElastiCache instance is deemed to be underutilized if the CPU usage is less than 2% for the past 48 hours.

Site24x7 monitors for all the cases mentioned above and provides suggestions for lowering your costs by identifying and stopping underutilized instances using the Guidance Report. Instance Type recommendations show the Current Instance Type and recommend the Suggested Instance Type you can downgrade to for better cost-cutting.

2. Scenario: You are using a low-level instance but using it to the fullest.

  • Amazon EC2
    An Amazon EC2 instance is deemed to be highly utilized if the average daily CPU usage is more than 90% for the last seven days and the average daily memory utilization is more than 90% for the last seven days.
  • Amazon RDS
    An Amazon RDS DB instance is deemed to be highly utilized if the average daily CPU usage is more than 90% for at least four out of the last seven days and the amount of disk space consumed is more than 85% for at least four out of the last seven days.
  • Amazon MQ
    An Amazon MQ instance is deemed to be highly utilized if the average daily CPU usage for the MQ broker is more than 90% for the last seven days.
  • Amazon DocumentDB
    An Amazon DocumentDB instance is deemed to be highly utilized if the average daily CPU usage is more than 90% for the last seven days.
  • Amazon Neptune
    An Amazon Neptune instance is deemed to be highly utilized if the average daily CPU usage is more than 90% for the last seven days.
  • Amazon ElastiCache
    An Amazon ElastiCache instance is deemed to be highly utilized if the average daily CPU usage is more than 90% for the last seven days.
