OCI DRG monitoring
A Dynamic Routing Gateway (DRG) in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) acts as a central hub that connects Virtual Cloud Networks (VCNs), on-premises networks, and remote peers across regions and tenancies. Since the DRG handles all private traffic routing, any issues in its configuration or performance can disrupt communication between critical environments.
Integrating OCI DRG monitoring with Site24x7 gives you complete visibility into your DRG and its components. Site24x7 tracks the health and availability of the DRG, its attachments, route tables, and route distributions. This helps identify routing issues early, ensures network traffic flows as expected, and reduces downtime risks.
Overview
Monitoring a DRG goes beyond simply checking if it is available. It requires visibility into attachments, route tables, and routing policies that decide how traffic flows between VCNs, on-premises networks, and remote peers. Site24x7 brings all of this information together in one place, giving you real-time alerts and monitoring across every component of the DRG.
When an attachment fails, a key route is missing, or a distribution policy rejects valid traffic, Site24x7 notifies you immediately so issues can be fixed before they cause downtime. By correlating DRG health with application and network performance, Site24x7 helps you identify the root cause of problems faster. Site24x7's integration with OCI DRG provides you with the following monitors:
- Dynamic Routing Gateway: Monitors the overall health, status, and performance of the DRG. This ensures that the DRG is available and routing private traffic correctly across connected networks.
- DRG Attachments: Attachments serve as connection points between the DRG and resources such as VCNs, FastConnect circuits, and IPsec tunnels. Site24x7 monitors attachment status to ensure these links remain active and that traffic can reach its next-hop targets without interruption.
- DRG Route Table: Each attachment has an associated DRG route table that directs traffic using dynamic or static routes. Site24x7 tracks route table configurations and routing health, helping you verify that the intended routes are properly set and directing traffic as expected.
- DRG Route Distribution: Route distributions define which routes are imported into or exported from DRG route tables. Site24x7 monitors distribution policies and learned routes, ensuring they align with network requirements while preventing routing gaps.
Use case
An e-commerce company relies on a hybrid cloud setup where its order management system runs in OCI while its inventory systems are hosted on-premises. The DRG handles routing between the on-premises data center, multiple VCNs, and a remote peer in another tenancy.
During a seasonal sale, the company experienced a sudden spike in traffic, and users began reporting delays on updates. Site24x7's monitoring helped the IT team quickly identify that one of the DRG attachments connected to FastConnect was degraded. At the same time, the DRG route table showed certain dynamic routes were not propagating as expected. With this visibility, the team isolated the issue, rerouted traffic through alternate connections, and resolved the problem in minutes. This not only ensured seamless customer experience during peak demand but also highlighted how Site24x7’s monitoring reduced troubleshooting time, prevented revenue loss, and improved overall reliability of the company's hybrid setup.
Benefits of Site24x7's DRG integration
Integrate your DRG with Site24x7 and leverage the following benefits:
- End-to-end visibility: Gain continuous insight into the DRG and its connected resources.
- Faster issue resolution: Detect and fix connectivity problems between VCNs, on-premises networks, and remote peers quickly.
- Error prevention: Monitor DRG attachments, route tables, and route distributions to avoid routing errors and policy misconfigurations.
- Reliable connectivity: Improve the stability of hybrid cloud and multi-region setups by ensuring consistent traffic flow.
Setup and configuration
- Site24x7 uses cross-tenancy access to monitor your resources using Site24x7's tenancy user. Log in to your Site24x7 account and create a specific policy to allow Site24x7 to view your resources without affecting your security.
- On the Integrate OCI Monitor page, select DRG from the Services to be discovered list.
Policies and permissions
Ensure the associated OCI policy has the following statement:
- "read drg-gateways"
Polling frequency
Site24x7 queries OCI service-level APIs according to the set polling frequency (from once a minute to once a day) to collect metrics from the DRG monitors.
